The new quieter, slimmer, PS3 will soon be iView enabled

The ABC is teaming up with Sony to deliver their iVew via the Playstation 3. The announcement, made at the Games Convention in Cologne, paves the way for PS3 owners to access over 300 programs that the ABC supplies via its on-demand video service.

ABC’s Director of Television, Kim Dalton, says the trial is the first in a series of developments to extend ABC iView to a wider audience. “We want to make our content as accessible as possible to our audience. Increasingly, that means extending our online reach so Australians can watch what they want, when they want it."

One of the major benefits of linking iView with games consoles like the PS3 is they are usually plugged in to the lounge room TV. Making iView accessible in the lounge room plasma with a minimum of fuss will likely open up a whole new range of on-demand viewers. The service currently averages 764,000 visits per month.

ABC's iView has taken the lead the Australian IPTV space, already negotiating unmetered download arrangements with many major ISP's. The agreement with Sony is non-exclusive and  ABC says partnerships with more platforms are already on the cards.

Don't have a PS3 and can't wait till your console becomes iView enabled? Perhaps you would like to snap up a new PS3 for cheap.

Today Sony announced a new, slimmer, quieter and more energy efficient PS3 will be available to Australians from September. The new unit will have a 120GB hard drive and will retail at $499. If that's still a bit too much for wallet, expect the current 80GB PS3 to drop in price significantly.
