Blackberry opens App World down under, but it's not a store

14 December 2009 | by Willem Reyners Tay Print this article Comments Share this article
Australian and New Zealand's Blackberry addicted received an early Christmas present over the weekend with launch of BlackBerry App World

More than six months after it's US launch, Blackberry App World is sans paid application. RIM might be hoping that it really is the thought that counts when it comes to it's Australian and New Zealand customers.

Blackberry lags behind well Apple with it's iTubes App store, Google's Android Marketplace and even Nokia's OVI application store.

Network provider Optus has even jumped on the bandwagon, becoming the first Telco to offer a cross platform approach, however the SingTel owned company has also been blocking access to paid apps on the Android Marketplace, even if it wont explicitly admit it.

Whilst everyone is scrambling to catch up with runaway success of the iPhone application ecosystem and it's estimated US$200 monthly app revenues, you have to wonder why so  operators and manufacturers insist on coming to the party only half dressed.
