iPhone usage is dominating traffic across public Wi-Fi networks according to Wi-Fi internet access hotspot operator CafeScreen.

CafeScreen operates a network of digital signs and free Wi-Fi Internet hotspots in CBD cafes throughout Australia targeting high-value and elusive CBD business professionals. Through the creation of the digital signage network, the company has also built Australia’s largest network of free Wi-Fi Internet hotspots. CafeScreen CEO Ruwan Weerasooriya said that while the concept of free public WiFi in Australia is still relatively new, there is growing take-up. “Consumers will require a higher degree of education and greater penetration of Wi-Fi devices for large scale adoption to occur,” he said.

Over the past 12 months the company has seen steady month on month growth in connections per hotspot and a doubling of average connection duration to almost 1 hour per session. CafeScreen have also found that 40% of Wi-Fi traffic is mobile. “Based on our Google analytics data the iPhone is the most prevalent device accessing our network. We saw loads of iPhones on the network prior to the handsets launch and this has grown rapidly since its official release of the handset,” he said.   The company is in the process of an aggressive roll-out of its out of home technology  across venues in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth  and Brisbane.
