Online DVD rental company Quickflix is escalating its plans to shift its distribution model to an IPTV based video streaming platform following the government’s $43 million FTTH announcement.

Quickflix founder and executive director Stephen Langsford described the revised NBN initiative as a giant leap forward which “will further enhance and strengthen Quickflix's current business and help us to deliver and stream high quality and cost effective entertainment to our members via the internet."

Quickflix currently has over 31,000 subscribers and reported 13% subscriber growth in the last quarter with revenue of $1.72 million. "With over five million households with internet access and at least one DVD player, this initiative will be the next major breakthrough in helping us stream feature length movies on a high speed network without interruptions or excessive download charges,” Langsford said.

The company is currently assessing a number of online distribution technologies for its eventual IPTV  launch. Langsford said that video rental demand continued despite the slowing economy and ahead of traditional rental stores due to the convenience of online choice and home delivery. “Our intention is to create Australia's leading online movie brand within the sphere of feature length movie and TV series available in standard definition and high definition DVD, Blu-ray and streaming formats.”
