Reading Room promises to shake up digital

UK based digital agency Reading Room has opened it's doors in Sydney with some choice words to the big agencies.  Whilst Reading Room has had a presence in Canberra for some time, Reading Room hopes the move to Sydney will bring a different approach to digital communications to a wider Australian market.

The key senior hires are Tom Voirol UX architect formerly from Amnesia and Reading Room Europe, Andrew Richardson, ex Creative Director at Amnesia Razorfish, and Cathie McGinn, ex Marketing and Communications Manager at Geekdom.

The Reading Room philosophy shuns the idea of a traditional sales team and account managers in favour of a workforce that can talk to clients directly.

The approach does limit who they can hire, according to new Reading Room Australia principal Tom Viorol who said "bullshit artists" were not welcome at Reading Room.

"We don't have dedicated sales people" said Viorol "we only have people who are involved in the project as well. The people who do the pitching are always the people who do the work" further noting that this even extended to developers. "Everyone has to be able to sit in front of a client and explain to them what needs to be done."

“We believe the way many agencies operate is not in the interests of the client, and Reading Room is set to change that in Australia." said Andrew Richardson noting that since the GFC "Budgets are tighter and clients are naturally looking for smart people who can deliver without the big agency bullshit."

Reading Room CEO Margaret Manning said that the move was part of a wider expansion which will also see current Group Board Director Sarah Vick move to Sydney to lead the Australian team and look for opportunities to expand into Asia.

"We have already been very successful in Canberra and the Australia wide expansion was a natural next step. Reading Room is delighted to match its global experience with the Australian ‘getting it done’ attitude.”
