SBS is to offer live streaming of the Tour de France in a significant move by the multicultural broadcaster. According to Lifehacker, SBS will offer live HD streams of the race via the in-browser SBS Video Player.
It's a significant move from the broadcaster, which has previously run into controversy before when the Ashes clashed with the Tour broadcast. Providing yet another avenue to watch the race live will go some way to placating fans.
However
nice the idea of live streaming the tour may be, you might want to
check your download limits before you jump in and watch a few hours of beautiful French scenery. Streaming video is notorious for the
amount of bandwidth it uses. Something that is not particularly suited to Australian sized
download quotas.
Unlike the ABC's iView, the SBS Video Player is not unmetered on major ISP's like iiNet and Internode. However iiNet users may have just had a nice surprise with download quotas increasing across the board.
The Tour de France will be running from July 4-27.
UPDATE: The live stream can now be accessed here from 10pm each night.
