Apple rejects potty mouth apps

11 March 2009 | In a surprising move which may please a few polticians in Canberra, Apple has begun rejecting app store software on the basis of the foul language content that may be derived from use of the applications in social media, not the apps themselves. The most notable example is the Twitter client app "Tweety" whose latest update was rejected because an advanced search function exposed trends in the public timeline of tags containing "bad" language. As many commentators have pointed out, the public timeline is available on the Twitter home page in the Safari browser (or any browser), leading some to speculate that all Twitter apps may be banned and that Safari itself may start to censor web pages. The application "Human Weather", which allows user comments on weather forecasts, was initially rejected on similar grounds according to its authors. In this case the producer of the software implemented a language filter and the app was resubmitted, and the app was then approved. While some of this may come down to Apple employing incompetent app reviewers, this points to a dangerous new direction that was suggested by iTunes implementing "coarse language" filters on song titles and band names apple and other major media gatekeepers acting utilizing unregulated judges of what is acceptable on the internet and a general "G Rating", based on conservative American values, of the whole internet.
